Why doesn't The JESUS Film Project and particularly its parent organization, Campus Crusade for Christ, appear on charity lists like Guidestar.com and CharityNavigator.com? Where might one find comparable information on the organization?
Charity observers like GuideStar and Charity Navigator usually obtain their information from I.R.S. 990 Form Reports. Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC), for which The JESUS Film Project is one of more than 30 ministries, is classified by the I.R.S. as a “Religious Missionary Order (RMO).” RMOs, like churches, are not required to file 990 Form documents with the I.R.S. Campus Crusade for Christ doesn't show up on such group’s lists, because they don't account for organizations like ours.
However, there are a number of public places where information on Campus Crusade for Christ can be found. One of those places is the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) directory. ECFA was chartered in 1979 to help Christ-centered organizations earn the public’s trust through developing and maintaining standards of accountability that convey God-honoring ethical practices. ECFA membership consists of more than 1,225 organizations with a combined income more than $15 billion, and ECFA provides recommendations and best practices for all of their members. ECFA’s recommendations are in line with the standards being recommended by the Nonprofit Panel Advisory Committee which was convened at the encouragement of U.S. Senate Finance Committee. In fact, the former president of ECFA was asked to sit on this panel due to his expertise and good reputation in the non-profit arena.
Campus Crusade for Christ is a charter member of the ECFA and is in full compliance with its guidelines and best practices. You can visit ECFA’s website, www.ECFA.org, to learn more about ECFA and view a stewardship report on Campus Crusade for Christ. Their assessment of our financial practices should provide one the confidence needed to partner with us.
There are other sources for information on the stewardship of Campus Crusade. One of the leading trade journals in the not-for-profit world, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, annually (early November issue) lists the top 400 largest charities in the United States with summary information on each. Campus Crusade for Christ is listed in the top 30 or so charities, based upon contributed revenue. Money magazine lists leading charities (December issue) and Campus Crusade has appeared on their list under the religious groups section.
On the Internet, under MinistryWatch.com one can see information on Campus Crusade for Christ.
MinistryWatch.com lists many Christian charities it examines, much like GuideStar and CharityNavigator. They give Campus Crusade for Christ an "A" for transparency. MinistryWatch.com includes several paragraphs on The JESUS Film Project in a group of the ministries it notes under Campus Crusade for Christ.
Furthermore, the ministry’s finances are audited annually by a top accounting firm. The CCC annual report, including the auditor’s report is available. You are welcome to request a copy or view one online. This report can answer many questions about Campus Crusade’s stewardship and allocation of funds such as the compensation received by our President and his wife, Steve and Judy Douglass. It also may be helpful for you to know that Steve and Judy Douglass raise their own personal ministry financial support as missionary staff of the organization. We trust this clarification and disclosure provides you the confidence to support this ministry, along with many tens of thousands of others who have invested in this work since 1979.
