Island Households Receive Gift of "JESUS."

Every family with a mailbox, on every island in the state of Hawaii, received a video copy of the film “JESUS” in April, in time for Easter. The project, called “JESUS Hawai’i Project,” was sponsored by 185 island Christian churches. Youth for Christ Hawaii also partnered with Campus Crusade for Christ in this endeavor, and The JESUS Video Project America handled the mailing from the mainland.

“It is a historic project in two ways,” said Keli’i Akina, local chairman for the JESUS Hawai’i Project, and executive director of Youth for Christ Hawaii. “The number of churches partnering together set a record for this type of campaign. And the scope of the project, statewide into every mailbox, is also a record.”

“It is not an attempt whatsoever to recruit for any denomination,” Akina said. “The contributions to pay for the videos came from individual congregations, and not denominations, including mainline Protestants and Catholic churches, as well as evangelical and Pentecostal groups.

“We understand if anyone doesn’t want it. If they would leave it at their post office, it won’t be wasted. Military chaplains will make it available for personnel living in barracks and on boats,” Akina went on to say. “Because of the times we live in, the Christian churches of Hawaii wanted to give a special Easter gift to the people of our state, a gift of hope and love which will make a difference in a world in which those things are scarce.”
