パリサイ人と取税人のたとえ話
イエスは、ゲネサレ湖の沖に出た舟の上で説教をします。パリサイ人と取税人が神殿に祈りに行くたとえ話を使って語ります。二人の男はもそれぞれ違った祈り方をします。 話の中でパリサイ人は、立ち上がり自分の善行を並べ上げ、他の人たちのように、どん欲、不正直、姦淫をする者でないことを神に感謝します。特に取税人のような者でない事を神に感謝します。週に２度は断食をし収入の十分の一を献金している事を、堂々と神に向かって述べます。 取税人は祭壇から離れた所に立ち、頭を垂れ、胸を叩きます。彼は、「神よ、この罪人を憐れんでください！」と祈るだけです。

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men — swindlers, evildoers, adulterers — or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and pay tithes of all that I acquire.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance, unwilling even to lift up his eyes to heaven. Instead, he beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man, rather than the Pharisee, went home justified. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
