Jesus is Sentenced
Jesus is dragged from Herod's palace. Jesus and the crowds come back to Pilate's courtyard. He sits in the judgment seat and says he will only order that Jesus be scourged. The council speaks up again. They remind Pilate that he is supposed to release one man to the Jews during the Passover Festival. The guards tie Jesus to a pole in the center of the courtyard and start to whip Him with cat o' nine tails that rip the flesh from His back. Pilate watches the courtyard warily before he leaves. Pilate makes his way back with a scroll. Jesus is released and dragged back in front of Pilate. He drops the crucifixion judgment at Jesus's feet.

શેર કરોઅને પિલાતે મુખ્ય યાજકોને તથા અધિકારીઓને તથા લોકને સમૂહમાં બોલાવીને તેઓને કહ્યું કે, ‘આ માણસ લોકને ભુલાવે છે, એવું કહીને તમે તેમને મારી પાસે લાવ્યા છો; પણ, જુઓ, મેં તમારી આગળ ઈસુની તપાસ કર્યા છતાં, જે વાતોનો તમે તેમના પર આરોપ મૂકો છો તે સંબંધી કંઈ પણ અપરાધ ઈસુમાં મને જણાયો નથી. તેમ જ હેરોદને પણ જણાયો નથી; કેમ કે તેણે તેમને અમારી પાસે પાછા મોકલ્યા; અને જુઓ, મરણદંડને યોગ્ય તેમણે કશું જ કર્યું નથી. માટે હું તેમને શિક્ષા કરીને છોડી દઈશ.’” હવે પાસ્ખાપર્વ નિમિતે તેઓને સારુ કોઈ એક અપરાધીને છોડી દેવો પડતો હતો. પણ તેઓએ ઊંચે અવાજે કહ્યું કે, ‘ઈસુને લઈ જાઓ, અને બરાબાસને અમારે સારુ છોડી દો.’” એ બરાબાસ તો શહેરમાં કેટલાક દંગા તથા હત્યા કરવાને લીધે જેલમાં નંખાયો હતો. ત્યારે ઈસુને છોડી દેવાની ઇચ્છા રાખીને પિલાત ફરીથી તેઓની સાથે બોલ્યો. પણ તેઓએ પોકારીને કહ્યું કે, ‘એને વધસ્તંભે જડાવો, વધસ્તંભે જડાવો.’” અને તેણે ત્રીજી વાર તેઓને કહ્યું કે, ‘શા માટે? તેણે શું ખોટું કર્યું છે? તેમનાંમાં મરણદંડને યોગ્ય મને કંઈ માલૂમ પડ્યું નથી; માટે હું તેને થોડી શિક્ષા કરીને મુક્ત કરી દઈશ.’” પણ તેઓએ મોટે અવાજે દુરાગ્રહથી માગ્યું કે ‘તેમને વધસ્તંભે જડાવો.’ અને છેવટે તેઓના ધાર્યા પ્રમાણે તેઓએ તેને મનાવ્યો. અને પિલાતે ફેંસલો કર્યો કે ‘તેઓના માગ્યા પ્રમાણે કરવામાં આવે.’” અને દંગો તથા ખૂન કરવાને લીધે જે માણસ જેલમાં પુરાયો હતો, અને જેને તેઓએ માગ્યો હતો, તેને તેણે છોડી દીધો, પણ ઈસુને તેઓની ઇચ્છાને સ્વાધીન કર્યા. અને તેઓ તેમને લઈ જતા હતા ત્યારે સિમોન નામે કુરેનીનો એક માણસ જે બહાર ગામથી આવતો હતો તેને તેઓએ પકડ્યો, અને તેના ખભા પર વધસ્તંભ ચઢાવ્યો, કે તે ઊંચકીને તે ઈસુની પાછળ ચાલે.
