Annas Questions Jesus's Authority
A Pharisee named Annas asks Jesus what right He has to say the kinds of things he says. In return, Jesus asks Annas a question. Jesus asks whether John's right to baptize came from God or from man. Annas turns with other Pharisees and talks to them. So they go back to Jesus and answer that they don't know who gave John the right to baptize. Jesus stares back. He says since they don't know, he won't tell them who gave Him the authority to teach the things He's been teaching.

Shareوَكَانَ يَسُوعُ يُعَلِّمُ النَّاسَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فِي سَاحَةِ الهَيْكَلِ وَيُعلِنُ بِشَارَتَهُ. فَاجتَمَعَ كِبَارُ الكَهَنَةِ وَمُعَلِّمُو الشَّرِيعَةِ مَعَ الشُّيُوخِ وَجَاءُوا إلَيْهِ، وَقَالُوا: «أخبِرنَا بِأيِّ سُلطَانٍ تَفْعَلُ هَذِهِ الأشْيَاءَ، وَمَنِ الَّذِي أعطَاكَ هَذَا السُّلطَانَ؟» فَأجَابَهُمْ يَسُوعُ: «وَسَأسألُكُمْ أنَا أيْضًا فَأجِيبُونِي: هَلْ كَانَتْ مَعمُودِيَّةُ يُوحَنَّا بِسُلطَانٍ مِنَ اللهِ، أمْ بِسُلطُانٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ؟» فَنَاقَشُوا الأمْرَ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُمْ: «إنْ قُلنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ سَيَقُولُ: ‹فَلِمَاذَا لَمْ تُصَدِّقُوهُ؟› وَإنْ قُلْنَا مِنَ النَّاسِ، فَسَيَرْجُمُنَا كُلُّ النَّاسِ لِأنَّهُمْ مُقتَنِعُونَ بِأنَّ يُوحَنَّا كَانَ نَبِيًّا.» فَقَالُوا إنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْرِفُونَ مَصدَرَ مَعمُودِيَّةِ يُوحَنَّا. فَقَالَ لَهُمْ يَسُوعُ: «وَلَا أنَا أُخبِرُكُمْ بِأيِّ سُلطَانٍ أفْعَلُ هَذِهِ الأُمُورَ.»
