Jesus Proclaims Fulfillment of the Scriptures

When Jesus returns to Nazareth, He goes to the synagogue. He's asked to read the Scriptures and is handed the Book of Isaiah. From it, He reads Isaiah 61:1-2. The prophecy speaks of bringing good news to the poor, proclaiming liberty to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, freeing the oppressed, and announcing that it's time the Lord will save His people. When He finishes reading, Jesus announces to the people that the prophecy has come true as it was just read.

Isaiah 61:1-2

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of our God’s vengeance, to comfort all who mourn,

Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read, the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

and He began by saying, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked. Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard that You did in Capernaum.’” Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

On hearing this, all the people in the synagogue were enraged. They got up, drove Him out of the town, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him over the cliff. But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way. Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath He began to teach the people.

And He came to Nazareth where He had been brought up. Hello. Hello. And on the Sabbath He went as usual to the synagogue. And He was called upon to read a portion of the Prophet Isaiah. "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has chosen Me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind. To set at liberty those who are oppressed, and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save His people." He speaks well. This passage of Scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read. The Scripture come true? But only the Messiah can fulfill that promise! How shall we know? Doubtless you will quote the proverb to Me, "Physician heal yourself." You'll also say to Me, "Now do the things in Your own home town, that we heard You did in Capernaum." I tell you this, no prophet is ever welcome in his hometown! By these words Jesus identified Himself as the Messiah, God's Anointed, sent to save His people. These Jews did not accept Him as the Messiah. They meant to throw Him over the cliff, but He walked through the middle of the crowd, and went His way,
