The Savior·55 chapters

The Savior

The Savior provides an introduction to Jesus through the Gospel of Luke, during the time when Rome ruled much of the world. This was a time of political strife and social unrest, and it was into this environment that Jesus was born. Much is recorded in the Gospels but little is known about his quiet time of growing up in Nazareth. Later he teaches in parables no one really understands, gives sight to the blind, and helps those who no one sees as worth helping. The Savior is a fresh portrayal of the life of Jesus with dialogue taken directly from the Gospel of Luke. It follows Jesus from his upbringing to his death and resurrection.

[MUSIC] The Savior [MUSIC] My friend, many have undertaken to record the wondrous events which transpired. Just as they were handed down to us from the original eyewitnesses, disciples and servants of the world. This has been my work. Carefully studying all of it from the beginning, just so I could write for you. An orderly record of all that happened to assure the exact truth of what you were taught. The angel Gabriel was sent from God, to a town in Galilee called Nazareth... ...to a virgin who was engaged to a man named Joseph... ...a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. Greetings, favored one. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women. Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have favor with God. You will conceive and bear a son, and you will call him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the son of the highest, and his reign will never end. Yes, but how can this be since I am a virgin? The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the highest will overshadow you. So the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God. Elizabeth, your cousin, is to be the mother of a child in her old age. She who was called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible with God. I am His servant. The Lord will be done. [MUSIC] Thy will be done, Lord. [MUSIC] [BLANK_AUDIO] A short time after Mary's visit from the angel, she journeyed to pay a visit to her cousin Elizabeth in Ein Karem. [MUSIC] Elizabeth? Elizabeth! Blessed are you among women, and the fruit of your womb is blessed. When the sound of your greeting reached these old ears, the child within me leapt with happiness. [MUSIC] God is my savior. My soul is shining with his perfect life. [MUSIC] [LAUGH] [MUSIC] It came time to circumcise the son of Elizabeth. The angel struck Zacharia mute for some time, because he doubted. [MUSIC] And will you name him after his father, Zacharia? No. His name must be John. But Zacharia, there are none of your relations who bear this name. He's been a mute since seeing the angel at the temple. [LAUGH] He is John. His name is John. John, yes. He will be called John. [MUSIC] You will be called his prophet, for you will be the Lord's messenger. To prepare his way, to teach his people of salvation through the remission of their sins. [MUSIC] What will this child become? [MUSIC] Then at this time, a decree came forth from Caesar Augustus, that a census would be taking of the empire. Joseph went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea... ...to the city of David as was called Bethlehem,... ...to be registered with Mary his betrothed wife, who was pregnant. While they were there, her days were completed to give birth. [MUSIC] I prepared a bit of straw here. I'm sorry. I'll be fine, Joseph. Everything will be all right. Thank you. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Don't be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy for all people, for today there was born for you, in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord. This is your sign, you will find the Baby wrapped... ...in cloth and lying in a manger. What are you all waiting for? Let's go see what has been done by the Lord. Follow me. [MUSIC] Blessed man, may we enter. An angel appeared to us and spoke of the birth of a baby. Christ the Lord, our Savior. Come in. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [Baby Crying] [Baby Crying] What is his name? Jesus. This we do to bring you into covenant. Jesus, you shall be named Jesus. [MUSIC] In Jerusalem there was a man called Simeon who was devout and righteous. He was told by the Holy Spirit he would see the Messiah before he left this life. Now, Lord, allow your servant to take his leave according to your word peacefully. Now that I have seen the wonderful salvation you have prepared before all of the nations of the world, a light of truth to the Gentiles and your people's glory. [MUSIC] When they had finished everything as it was in the law of the Lord, they returned to their city in Galilee Nazareth. [MUSIC] No, my son. Watch me. Like this. My son, I'll come back in a moment. Yes. The Child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom... ...and the grace of God rested upon Him. [MUSIC] His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom, stature and in favor... ...with God and men. [MUSIC] In the 15th year of the reign of the Emperor Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate served as governor of Judea, and Herod was the Tetrarch of Galilee, the world of God, ...to John, the son of Zachariah, when he was in the wilderness. I am the voice crying in the wilderness. Prepare the way of the Lord. His roads must be straight and true. All valleys will be filled up. Every hill and mountain will be made to be low. The crooked shall become straight, and the rough place is plain. And all mankind will see God salvation. Glory to God! Your brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. Don't tell yourselves. Abraham is our father. For I say unto all of you, God is able to raise up from these stones children to Abraham. The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire. I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, and I am not worthy to untie the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. The Holy Spirit descended on Him... ...in bodily form like a dove, ...and a voice from heaven said, You are my beloved Son. In You I am well pleased. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, after which... ...He was tempted by the devil. He did not eat in this period. If You are the Son of God, tell this stone... ...to become bread. If you are the son of God, then command this stone here to turn to bread. It's written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word from God. When the devil had finished tempting Him, he departed from Him for a while. He went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee. Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. [Music] He began to teach people on the Sabbath, and they were amazed because his message had authority. Can a blind person guide a blind person? Won't they both stumble into our pit? [Laughter] A disciple is not above his teacher, but every well-trained student becomes like his teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye? When you're unaware of the beam in your own eye, how can you say, "Let me remove that splinter," without even noticing the beam in your eye? Hypocrite. First, remove the beam from your own eye. Only then can you see clearly to remove the splinter from him. [Screaming] What is between us, Jesus, that you should trouble me? Have you come to try destroying me? And I know who you are. You are the Holy One of God. Stop it. Get out of him. [Panting] [Music] Jesus, thank you. [Music] Please don't leave. Stay with us. I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to other towns. For this purpose I was sent. [Music] Two men went up to the temple to pray. One a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed to himself like this, "God, you have my thanks, that I am not like other men, criminals, swindlers, adulterers, or even like this tax collector." I fast twice a week and I give a tenth of everything I earn. But standing off a bit, the tax collector would not even turn his eyes towards heaven, but struck his breast and said, "Have mercy on me, God, a sinner." This man, I say, went down to his house justified rather than the religious man. For he who exalts himself will be humbled. He who humbles himself will be exalted. Your sins are forgiven. Who is this man speaking these blasphemies? And who can forgive sins other than God alone? What are you thinking about in your hearts? What's easier for me to say your sins are forgiven or to say rise and walk, but so that you may know that the Son of Man does have the authority to forgive sins on this earth? I tell you, rise, pick up your bed, and return to your home. I thank you, Jesus. Thank you, God. Thank you, Jesus. Look at me, everybody. Surely God has healed me. Look at me. Look at me and praise God. I can walk. I can walk. My health is good. Can you believe it? I'm healed. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. [Music] At day break He summoned His disciples and... ...chose 12 of them whom... ...He named apostles. [Music] And they are, Simon, whom He also called Peter... ...and his brother, Andrew James John Philip Bartholomew Matthew Thomas James, the son of Alphaeus Simon, the Zealot Judas, the brother of Jacob Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed Him. [Music] Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for I say you will laugh. And blessed are you when men hate you, ostracize you, and spurn your name, reject it as evil for the son of man's sake. Be glad in that day and exalt, for your reward will be great in heaven, for that is how their fathers treated the prophets. But woe to those of you who are rich, for you have received your comfort. Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and you will weep. Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets. But I say to all of you who hear, love your enemies. I say do good to those who hate you, bless those who will curse you. I say pray for those who mistreat you. And if you only love those who love you, what credit is that to you, for even sinners love those who love them? I say be merciful, just as your father is. Do not pass judgment, you won't be judged. And do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For what measure you deal out to others is measured to you. Oh, my son! Alas, my son! Oh, my son! Alas, my son! Alas, my son! My son! My son! Do not weep. (gasps) Young man, I say to you, rise. (sobbing) Go away, woman. Be calm, you say. Don't get close to me. Go away from here. I tried to stop her, but I couldn't master. Leave her, Peter. Jesus. Jesus. Jesus, my Master. My Lord. If this person were a prophet,... ...He would know what kind of woman is touching Him. For she is a sinner. Simon. I want to tell you something. Speak. Tell me, teacher. There were two men who were in debt, to the same lender. One owed him 500 dinari, and the other 50. Neither of them had the money to pay the lender back, so he forgave both debts. Now which of the two men will love him more? Well, I guess the one of them whose debt was the larger. You have judged correctly. Do you see this woman? As I entered your home, you didn't provide any water for my feet. But she has washed my feet with her tears. And she wiped them with her hair. You did not give me one kiss, but she has not stopped kissing my feet. You didn't anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with perfume. Therefore I must tell you this. This woman's many sins are forgiven, because she loved much. But the one who's forgiven little, loves little. All your sins are forgiven. Who is this who forgives sins? Your faith has saved you. Go in peace. Teacher, we know that you have come from God as a teacher, for no one would be able to accomplish all of these signs, unless God is truly with Him. I say to you truly that nobody can see the kingdom of God, unless he's born again. But if a man is old already, how can he be born again? Must he then return to his mother's womb over again, to be born a second time? I say to you truly, no person enters into the kingdom of God, unless born of water and the Spirit. What is born of flesh is flesh. What is born of Spirit is spirit. Don't be surprised by what I've said, that it's necessary for you to be born again. The wind blows where it washes, and you can hear its sound, but you can't determine where it comes from, or where it's headed. It is the way with all born of the Spirit. But how is all this possible? If I tell you earthly things and you do not believe, then how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? I am listening. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son. Whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but they will have eternal life. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it. He sent me here to save it. He left Judea and went back to Galilee. And He had to pass through Samaria. So He came to Jacob's well. Well, I do not think that we are going to find any food on the side of this mountain. Right. We'd better go to town. Come on. Looks like we are going to Samaria. Let's go. May I drink? How is it that you ask me to give you to drink? You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan. Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. If you knew the gift of God, and who asks you for a drink, then if you had asked Him, he would give you living water. Good man, you've no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get this living water? All who drink of this water will thirst again. But everyone who drinks of the water that I'm offering, shall never know the pain of thirst again. The living water that I give turns into a bottomless welling spring of eternal life. Give this water to me. Then I will not have to come all this way to draw water every day of my life. Get your husband and come back here. I have no husband. You're right. When you say you have no husband, but you have had five husbands, and you live with a man now, outside marriage. I believe you are a prophet. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you have taught that Jerusalem is the place where we must worship. A time is coming, No, it is here when the true worshippers will worship Father in spirit and truth. The Father is looking for worshippers such as these, for we know God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth. [footsteps] Well, we managed to find something edible in Samaria. -A teacher, let's eat. -Come on. I have food to eat that you do not know about. [grunting] Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Him. He stayed with them two days and they said to the woman,... ..."Now we believe, not because of what you told us... ..for we have heard Him ourselves and we know that this Man really is... ...the Savior of the world." When a great multitude were gathering around Him, and those from the... ...various cities were coming to Him, He spoke to them in parables. [music] A sower went out to sow his seed and... and as he sowed, some of his seed fell beside the road. It was trampled underfoot, and the birds devoured it. Some seed fell on rock. It soon grew up, but withered, because it didn't have moisture. Some of the seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew with it and were choking it. Other seed fell onto good ground and grew into a crop, a hundred times as great. If you have ears still here, I hope you hear. Master, what does this parable mean? About the sower and the seed? Tell us, Master, what does it mean? To you it's given to know the secrets of God's kingdom. Here is the meaning. The seed is the Word of God. Those that fell beside the road, they are the ones who have heard the Word. Then the devil takes the Word away from their hearts, so they may not believe. The seed that fell on rock are those that receive the Word with joy when they first hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a time until temptation tears them down. Those that fell among the thorns are those who have heard, but then as they go on they are choked. With cares, with wealth, with pleasures, they bring no fruit to maturity. And the seed that fell upon good ground are those who have received the Word with a good heart, a righteous heart, and then bear fruit through their perseverance and faith. [music] John the Baptist was imprisoned in King Herod's fortress. And then one evening, a party was held in King Herod's honor. [music] Herodias, my lovely queen, lovely queen. Your daughter has enchanted my court. [music] Such a welcome and warm birthday gift. Salumi is at your service, your majesty. [music] [music] [music] [applause] [music] Ask of me anything you want, and I will give it. Anything I wish? Yes. Anything you wish you shall receive up to half of my kingdom. Salumi, come over here. Tell him that you want the head of John the Baptist. Go to him. But half the kingdom, the Baptist spoke against me, and the king is falling under his spell. Do this for your mother. Salumi, you must trust me. Only for you, my mother. I wish the head of John the Baptist here and now, Go and do as she wishes. [music] [singing] Cut off the head of John the Baptist. [music] The lame walked the blind see, the deaf hear, and the dead are raised to life. [music] [music] Listen, listen, a teacher of the law wants to ask you a question. Ask it, Hezekiah, ask it, ask it. So, teacher, what should I do to be blessed with eternal life? What is written in the law? Love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole soul, and with your whole strength, and with your whole mind, and your neighbor as yourself. Your neighbor is correct. If you do all of this, you'll live. And who is my neighbor? Tell me. A man was travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho. He came upon robbers who stripped him, wounded him, and left him suffering between life and death. And by chance, a priest came down the road. He saw the suffering man and went by to the other side. And when a Levite happened to come upon the place as well, and also saw the man there beside the road, and turned away, and passed by on the opposite side of the road, but a Samaritan came upon him. And seeing him, he was filled with compassion, and came to him, and covered his wounds after pouring on them oil and wine. He put the man on his animal, and he brought him to an inn and took care of him. And when he left the inn the next day, he took out wo dinari, and he gave them to the innkeeper, and he told him, "This is for him. If you spend more than this, then I will repay you when I return." Tell me, which of the three do you think proved to be a neighbor for the misfortuate man? The man who treated his wounds and showed him mercy. So I'm telling you now, go and do the same. Jesus, teach us to pray. Yes, Master. How should we pray? To pray, find an inner room, and go into it. Close the door behind you, and pray to your Father. Not like a pagan, reciting and re-reciting meaningless repetitions again and again. For your Father knows what it is that you need before you ask Him. This is the way you should pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done here on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Teacher, I'd like to know when God's kingdom is coming. I hope that it will be sooner. The kingdom of God won't come with signs to be observed. They won't say, "Look, here it is," or "It's over there." For the kingdom of God is within you. Just as the lightning when it flashes in part of the sky, it shines in the others, it shines in the others. So it will be when the Son of Man returns. But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. Please, this way, Master. Look, it's Jesus. Bless us, Jesus. Don't bother the Master. Don't bother the Master with these little children. He's busy with serious matters. Don't bother Him. Let the children come to Me and do not forbid them. For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I say to you, whoever doesn't receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it at all. Teacher, tell me, what must I do to be blessed with eternal life? You know the commandments. Honor your father and your mother. Do not kill. Do not steal. Or bear false witness. Or commit adultery. I've obeyed all of that all my life. There's one thing you lack. Sell all that you have. Give what you make to the poor. Then you'll have a great treasure in heaven. Then come follow me. [footsteps] Where are we going? We are going to Jerusalem. For the time has come for the Son of Man to be delivered up to the Gentiles. He will be mocked, mistreated, and spat upon. And after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him. And on the third day He'll rise. [music] O Jerusalem, O Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those sent to you. How often I have longed to gather your children together. As a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Glory be to God! Glory be to God! Glory be to God! Jesus entered Jerusalem triumphantly, and the people proclaimed, blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. [crowd chanting] Listen, people! Glory be to God! Glory be to God! He is the King that comes from God! Teacher, rebuke your disciples. I promise you, if these go quiet, the rocks will cry out. [music] [crowd chattering] It is written, "My house is the house of prayer." You have made it a meeting place of robbers. [crowd cheering] Tell us now, by what authority do you do these things? First I will ask you one question you must answer. Did the baptism of John come from heaven or from men? If we say from heaven, he'll ask why we did not believe in him. If we say from men, we'll be stopped by the people, because they are certain John was a prophet. We have no answer for now. Then neither will I tell you by what authority I act. Come Annas, we have work to do. Have you brought me some good news? Well, we cannot arrest him in the temple. He's among a crowd. There could be a riot. No, no! This will not happen. He will be dealt with. We need one of his followers, ...someone who knows His inner movements. Bring me evidence showing he's apposed to Rome. That's all that we need. Rome displeasures these messianic troublemakers, as much as we do. Yet we are far from the same. For he threatens our positions! Yes, you are right. We must trick him now, and bring him before the rule and the government of Rome. Teacher, when will the end come? Don't be misled. A great many will come in my name, claiming, "I am the one, and the end is coming." Do not follow them. When you hear reports of wars or disasters, you must not fear. All of this needs to happen first. Just know, the end will not be coming immediately. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. In many places there will be violent earthquakes, and famine, and disease. But also, before all of this, people will lay their hands upon you, and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons. They will drag you to stand before the governors and the kings. Because of my name. But that will give you an opportunity to testify. We simply must find a way to stop this madman. I have already found a way. [music] Teacher! Teacher, I have a question for you. Teacher, we have heard that you speak truthfully and instruct correctly and impartially, simply expressing the truth of God's way. Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Give me a coin. Whose image is this you see upon it? Caesars. Then give Caesar what is Caesars, and God what is God's. Well, no one could argue or contradict that. Be wary of the scribes, who like to parade around in expensive robes greeted by old men. Who have the highest seats in the temple and places of honor at banquets. Then they devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Beware of all these. [music] Truly I say to you, this poor widow has given more than all of the others put together. For out of their surplus comes everything that they put into the offering. But she, out of her need, contributed all that she had to live on. [music] The Feast of Unleavened Bread, called Passover, was near. The chief priests and the scribes were all conspiring to kill Jesus, because they were afraid of the people. Then we are in agreement. This Jesus person must be dealt with. He must not be allowed to continue with his blasphemy. We act or we look weak. Or God forbid our silence be interpreted as agreement with his madness. The people could very well rise up against us. There is a man I know we can use. [music] This is the very man I told you about right here. Can you tell us where to find him? Yes, I can. It must be a place that is very secluded, away from the crowds. There is a place. But the coins first. It's just dirty coins. Yes. Oh yes. After we have him. [music] I should get back, so I am not missed. [music] Now, the plane is arranged. Are you satisfied? Right. Well done, Anas. The day of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." [music] I am pleased to eat this Passover with you, before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again, until it is fulfilled in God's kingdom. Blessed are you, Lord, our God, who brings forth bread from the earth. This is my body given for you. Do this to remember me. [water running] Blessed are you, Lord, our God, King of all, who created the fruit of the vine. In this cup, the new covenant in my blood. [music] [music] Master, you would wash my feet? You do not yet understand what I do, but you will understand it very soon. No, you shall not wash my feet. But I have to, otherwise you have no part with me. [music] [water running] Please, Master, not just my feet, but my hands and head as well. He who is bathed needs wash nothing beside his feet, for the rest of them is clean. And you are clean. But not all of you. [music] [water running] [music] Do you see what I have done for you? [music] You refer to me as teacher and master. This I am. You're right. If I, being your teacher and master, have washed all of your feet, then all of you must also wash each other's feet. The one betraying me is with me at the table. The Son of Man will proceed as it has been written. But woe be unto thy man who betrays him. Well, it's not me. Who would do such a thing, Master? I don't think there is any doubt. There's only one he depends on more than the others. Peter! You treat everyone as if they were your servant. Peter always stands at the right hand of the Master. They are right, Peter. You push past all of us so you can sit at the Master's right hand. Of course. I am the one who matters most. Let the greatest among you. Become the smallest. For I have come to you as one who serves. It is written. You will all leave me this night. I will strike the shepherd, and then all of the sheep of his flock will be scattered. They all may fall away, but I won't. Simon. Simon. Satan would like nothing more than to see you sifted as wheat. I've got to go. But I have prayed for you that your faith will not fail. I am ready and willing to go with you to prison. And to death. I tell you this, Peter. The cock won't crow this day until you have the night three times that you even know me. Pray you will withstand temptation. Father,... If you will, then take this cup from me. Not my will, however yours. Yours be done. Father. if You are will,... ...take this cup from Me,... ... not My will however, Yours... ... Yours be done. Father? Father? Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, you will withstand temptation. (Singing) So Judas, you betrayed the Son of Man with a kiss. (Music) (Screaming) My ear! Stop, No more of this! Are we robbers that you come at us with swords and clubs? While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your time. For darkness reigns now. Take him. (Music) (Music) Welcome. dignified and respected one. Honor him. Dear guest. I saw you with him. Woman. I don't know him. Let's play a game! You're one of them too. You are wrong. I am not. Prophecy. Who hit you? Ah? Ah? Wrong answer. It wasn't me. Try again. Who hit you? I know this fellow was with him. He is a gallery and also... I have nothing to do with him. The cock won't crow this day. Until you have the night three times that you even know me. (Laughing) Lift him up! (Laughing) (Laughing) I really must insist you do better this time. Son of God. Who was it? Huh? Who kicked you? (Screaming) Go. What are you here for? These are your coins. Our coins? You have earned them. I have simply betrayed innocent blood. This is no one's problem but yours. Guards Off with you. (Laughing) (Music) Tell us if you are the Christ. If I tell you, you won't believe me. If I ask you, you will not answer. From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of God Almighty. Are you the Son of God? It has been said by you that I am He. Do we need more testimony? We have heard it from His own lips. Let him go now. To Pilate. Your Excellency, we found this man causing trouble stirring up sedition through the countryside. Forbidding payment of tribute to Caesar, claiming he is the Messiah and King. Are you the King of the Jews? We have no king but Caesar. Long live Caesar. What is this person? A fake and a dissident. Just look at him. Are you the King of the Jews? You say I am. I am not finding any guilt in this man. He has been stirring up the people with his blasphemous teachings all across Judea from Galilee to the steps of the temple. Ah, is this man Galilean? Yes. Then this falls under the jurisdiction of Herod. Yes, but still. Herod is in Jerusalem. Is he not? Yes, he is for the Passover. Then I suggest you take him before Herod. Now Herod must deal with him. But couldn't you? Take him before Herod. Take this headache directly to Herod. This won't solve the problem. This won't change nothing. I will not accept this. [music] Is this the Man? Yes, it is, your Majesty. Mmm... Looks rather dirty. He stinks. He's had a hard time of it lately. He used to insist he was a king. Very well. But then kings are not treated in this manner. Leave me with this man. I have heard much about you. And I must admit... I would hear more still... More about you. They say you have... Raised up the dead... And have made a blind man see... And made lame men walk again. Yes. I know what the disciples... of the one that was called John the Baptist... Said to him to raise his spirits... And give him joy... And even stranger. I actually heard a ridiculous story... That you walked on water. One little thing... For me, please. Something... Anything... Make me believe. Make me a believer. Very well. So you don't want to speak! You know who I am? Do you know that I have the power to take your life and throw it away? Or to give it back to you? Beg. I want you to grovel. To beg me to spare your strange little broken existence! Zadok! Move! There you go! Now you look like a king. Take him back to Pilate! We're here for Caesar's justice! Don't you hear? How many charges they bring against you? Don't you want to answer to a single charge? Very well. Have it as you choose. Let the people decide. Bring prisoner Barabbas. Barabbas! Barabbas! Your Passover custom... ...will allow you all to secure the release of one prisoner. Here are two. Barabbas, a notorious criminal... ...or this man here, who stands before you. Who do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, the criminal? Or Jesus, who is called Christ? Barabbas! I bring a message. It's your wife who sends me urgently. Tell me. Tell me openly right here. I have no time. I'm busy. She's telling you. Please have nothing to do with this innocent man. I suffered much in a dream. Last night because of him. Which one do you want me to release for you? Barabbas! Barabbas! What then shall I do with Jesus, this person called the king of the Jews? To the cross! Crucify him! To the cross! Tell me why. Say what evil the man has done that justifies the cross. Crucify him! Crucify! Crucify! Crucify! Crucify! Crucify! Listen. Let him be crucified. Fetch a bowl of water. I am innocent of this Man's blood. And then, are you not loyal to Caesar? Remove his chains. Let him go. Freedom! Freedom! Freedom! Thank you. Thank you. Freedom! Freedom! I'm free! Flog him now. Then the cross. [MUSIC] Lift him! [MUSIC] Stand away! Stand Back, Get Out! Stand back you Stand up, get up! Hey You. What's your name? -Simon of Cyrene. - Go Carry this cross ! Come on, Go! Move Ahead! Quick, Move! Father, forgive them, they know not what they are doing! If He had saved others. Let Him save Himself, if He is a man of God and His Chosen One. Here is your son before, Woman Here is your mother. My God,... ...why have You forsaken Me? After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was already complete, He said... I'm thirsty. ...there was a vessel full of vinegar, so they soaked a sponge in it and lifted it to his lips. [laughter] If you're king of the Jews, then save yourself! [laughter] Aren't you the Messiah? Then save yourself and us! [sigh] Don't you fear God? When you are punished like criminals? [cough] Our punishment is just...it's just...this is what I deserve for the crimes I have committed. But this man has done nothing wrong. Remember me, Jesus, when you enter into your kingdom. I tell you, truly... ...with me, today you shall be in paradise. [laughter) Jesus cried out with a mighty voice... ...and gave up his spirit. The sun turned black, the earth shook, and the curtain of the temple rent into... ...from top to bottom. [thunder] [thunder] [sigh] Father, into... ... your hands I commit my spirit. It is finished. [thunder] [thunder] [thunder] So that the bodies would not be hanging on crosses on the Sabbath. One of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, and instantly blood and water came out. [Music] Joseph of Arimathea. I'm here to ask... ...to take the body of Jesus... ...for burial. But don't you sit on the High Council? You're correct. But I oppose their activities... ...and actions too. On what basis? I'm waiting for the kingdom of God. Jesus is gone? Yes. A guard will help you. I will let him to rest in my private tomb. Leave! I will hear no more about this Jesus man. [music] The woman who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph... ...and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. [music] and on the Sabbath they rested according to their commandment but on the first day of the week, at early dawn they came to the tomb bringing the spices they had prepared Look over there Do you see? [Why do you look for the living among the dead? ] He is not here, but he has risen Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee saying The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and on the third day rise again We must tell all of them, come on, come on [ knock on door ] Who is there? Open the door, it's us, let us in He has risen, he has returned You can trust me, he is not in the tomb What? Two angels were over there, the tomb is empty He has risen, yes he has I don't believe you You can trust me, he has risen up, he has risen up From the tomb? Indeed He has risen He has risen Peter it's true! He has risen, he has risen He has risen He has risen indeed And lead us not into temptation And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil Peace be with you Why are you so troubled? And why are there doubts arising in your hearts? See my hands and my feet It truly is me You can touch me and be certain A spirit doesn't have flesh and bones, as you can see I have. Is there any food here? This is what I spoke to you about while I was still with you. That all things written of me must be fulfilled in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms. And thus it is written and so it is that the Messiah should suffer, only to rise from the dead on the third day. Over a period of 40 days after his suffering, he showed himself alive by many convincing proofs, speaking of things concerning the Kingdom of God. Stay in Jerusalem. Do not leave until after the fulfillment of the Father's promise of which I have spoken. Now all authority is mine in heaven and on earth. Go therefore, make disciples of all nations, baptize them in the name of their Father, their Son, and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to live in the way which I have commanded all of you to live. And I am with you all the time, until the very end. [Music] Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus who ascended to heaven will return in the same way you have seen Him go up to heaven. [Music]
