પછી મુખ્ય યાજકો તથા લોકોના વડીલો કાયાફા નામે પ્રમુખ યાજકની કચેરીમાં એકત્ર થયા. ઈસુને કપટથી પકડીને મારી નાખવા માટે તેઓએ સંકલ્પ કર્યો. પણ તેઓએ કહ્યું કે, “પર્વમાં નહિ, રખેને લોકોમાં હુલ્લડ થાય.”

તેથી જે યહૂદીઓ મરિયમની પાસે આવ્યા હતા, અને તેમણે ઈસુએ જે કર્યું તે જોયું હતું, તેઓમાંથી ઘણાંએ તેમના પર વિશ્વાસ કર્યો. પણ તેઓમાંના કેટલાકે ફરોશીઓની પાસે જઈને ઈસુએ જે કામ કર્યાં હતા, તે તેઓને કહી સંભળાવ્યાં. એ માટે મુખ્ય યાજકોએ તથા ફરોશીઓએ સભા બોલાવીને કહ્યું કે, ‘આપણે શું કરીએ? કેમ કે એ માણસ તો ઘણાં ચમત્કારિક ચિહ્નો કરે છે. જો આપણે તેમને એમ જ રહેવા દઈશું, તો સર્વ તેના પર વિશ્વાસ કરશે અને રોમનો આવીને આપણું રહેઠાણ તથા આપણો દેશ લઈ લેશે. પણ કાયાફા નામે તેઓમાંનો એક જે તે વર્ષે પ્રમુખ યાજક હતો, તેણે તેઓને કહ્યું કે, ‘તમે કંઈ જાણતા નથી, વિચારતા નથી કે લોકોને માટે એક માણસ બલિદાન આપે અને તેથી સર્વ પ્રજાનો નાશ થાય નહિ, એ તમારે માટે હિતકારક છે.’” તેણે તો એ પોતાના તરફથી કહ્યું ન હતું, પણ તે વરસમાં તે પ્રમુખ યાજક હોવાથી તેણે ભવિષ્ય કહ્યું કે, લોકોને માટે ઈસુ મૃત્યુ પામશે. અને એકલા યહૂદી લોકોના માટે નહિ, પણ એ માટે કે ઈશ્વરનાં વિખૂટાં પડેલાં બાળકોને પણ તે એકઠાં કરીને તેઓને એક કરે. તેથી તે દિવસથી માંડીને તેમને મારી નાખવાની તેઓ યોજના કરવા લાગ્યા.
