તેથી જે યહૂદીઓ મરિયમની પાસે આવ્યા હતા, અને તેમણે ઈસુએ જે કર્યું તે જોયું હતું, તેઓમાંથી ઘણાંએ તેમના પર વિશ્વાસ કર્યો. પણ તેઓમાંના કેટલાકે ફરોશીઓની પાસે જઈને ઈસુએ જે કામ કર્યાં હતા, તે તેઓને કહી સંભળાવ્યાં. એ માટે મુખ્ય યાજકોએ તથા ફરોશીઓએ સભા બોલાવીને કહ્યું કે, ‘આપણે શું કરીએ? કેમ કે એ માણસ તો ઘણાં ચમત્કારિક ચિહ્નો કરે છે. જો આપણે તેમને એમ જ રહેવા દઈશું, તો સર્વ તેના પર વિશ્વાસ કરશે અને રોમનો આવીને આપણું રહેઠાણ તથા આપણો દેશ લઈ લેશે.
