Sermon on the Mount

Jesus turns to the crowds and walks through them, teaching. He advises everyone how to walk through life in love. And talks of how, out of pride, we often judge others. He implores those who are listening to love their enemies, to actively pray for them. He speaks of offering more than what is asked of you. Do for others what you would have them do for you.

Luke 6:24-42

But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers treated the false prophets in the same way. But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye? How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while you yourself fail to see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

...seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, That's all I've got. What do you mean that's all you've got! How terrible for you who are rich now! You have had your easy life. (Laughing) He doesn't want to be rich. He must be mad. How terrible for you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. How terrible when all men speak well of you, for their ancestors said the very same things about the false prophets. But I tell you who hear Me: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. And pray for those who mistreat you. If anyone strikes you on the one cheek, let him hit the other one also. And if someone takes away your coat, let him have your shirt as well. Give to everyone who asks you for something. And if someone takes what is yours, do not ask for it back again. Do for others only what you would have others do for you. If you love only the people who love you, why should you receive a blessing? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners do that. How could He touch her? How could He talk to her? Disgusting! No, love your enemies, and do good to them. And lend expecting nothing back. And then you will have a great reward, for you will be sons of the Most High God. For He is good to the ungrateful and to the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Save us, Jesus! Judge not and you will not be judged! Condemn not, and you will not be condemned! Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Lead us in Your path, Lord! Give, and it will be given to you. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back. One blind man cannot lead another! If he does they will both fall into a ditch. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye but pay no attention to the log in your own eye? Guide us, Master! We need You now, Lord!
