What is the Metaverse?

The metaverse is a network of shared digital spaces on platforms like VRChat, Roblox, Minecraft, Meta Horizon Worlds and more. There, people gather, talk, play, work and create together in real time—through games and using their phones or computers.

Think of the metaverse as the next evolution of web forums, chat platforms and the internet. But with the metaverse, it’s not a website you look at, but a place you enter. In this place called the metaverse, real people create real communities and experience unique and meaningful moments together.

Why the Metaverse is Important

The metaverse is a powerful digital mission field, filled with real people––many of whom are seeking connection, identity and purpose. Millions enter the metaverse’s immersive spaces every day, because they know there they can find deep conversations, form relationships quickly, and build trust with others through shared experiences.

Just as Christian missionaries once went to new cities and nations, today we are called to enter these digital worlds to share hope in Jesus. And once inside, we aren’t just visitors or look on from afar. We can genuinely participate, be present, listen, and faithfully represent Christ in a digital world where people already live and gather.

A Mission Field for Today

The metaverse is not a future mission field. The metaverse exists now, and it needs Christians and the church around the world to be there too.

Stories and Testimonials

People are looking for and finding Jesus in the metaverse.

James’ Story

James, a University of Wisconsin student, transitioned from feeling lost to declaring his faith in Jesus after communicating with Matt and David in  VRChat.

James first met Matt and David in a VRChat church world. Initially, James described himself as feeling lost. Over time, through consistent conversations with Matt and David, James began to warm up to having discussions about faith with them. He admitted he had a Christian background but was more inclined to believe in science. During this time, James fell sick and was hospitalized. In the hospital, a chaplain offered him a Bible, which he accepted and began reading. James later told Matt on Discord that he decided to follow Jesus! James connected with a local chapter of Cru on his college campus and attended a movie night. He soon indicated a positive step in his faith journey.

Anna’s Story

Anna made a clear decision to give her life to the Lord during a conversation with Lisa in Roblox.

Anna engaged in a deep conversation with us during a Roblox session. During this interaction, Anna expressed a desire to give her life to the Lord. We guided her through the process, and Anna made a clear decision to follow Christ. This significant moment was documented and is set to be included in the Metaverse Ministry Tool Kit. Despite the chaotic nature of the metaverse environment, this decision marked a pivotal change in Anna’s life.

Timothy’s Story

Timothy, also known as Cyber Sage, made a decision for faith during a VRChat session.

Timothy, who goes by the username Cyber Sage in VRChat, engaged in meaningful spiritual discussions with someone on our team. During these interactions, Timothy made a clear decision to embrace faith in Christ. We don’t have all the details of the conversation that led to his decision, but we do know that it was a significant moment for Timothy. We unfortunately lost the connection with Timothy shortly after his decision and are still attempting to follow up with him, but we do trust that today he is on a journey of faith with God.

It’s Okay to Have Questions

You may have questions of your own.

  • How can we be genuine when it’s all digital? Even when you can’t be in the same physical space, God can allow you to connect with someone’s heart. The heart is still the place where God works best. He’s able to show Himself to those for whom He loves and has a purpose as we trust Him (Ephesians 3:14-18).
  • Is not being physically present a hurdle?
  • Does it matter that I don’t know enough about the metaverse? Maybe you feel like you don’t have the right tools.

We can help.

The metaverse represents interconnected digital worlds where people socialize, work, and play. Churches should care because millions spend significant time in these spaces, creating unprecedented ministry opportunities. Understanding metaverse concepts helps churches reach people where they already gather digitally.

If you’re considering digital evangelism in the metaverse, the right starting point depends less on your technical ability and more on your calling, temperament, and availability. Here are several factors to consider:
If you’re unsure where to start:

  • Start where conversations are natural
  • Start where your personality fits
  • Start small and stay consistent
  • Start with prayer

You don’t have to do everything. You just have to take the next faithful step. The metaverse is not the mission—people are. And the Lord will guide you as you step forward in obedience.

Many platforms are free (Discord, Roblox, VRChat). Costs may include premium features ($5-15/month), VR equipment ($200-1000), custom content creation ($100-500), and server hosting ($10-50/month). Start small and scale based on community response.

Emphasize virtual ministry as a supplement to, not replacement for, in-person community. Encourage local meetups, provide pathways from digital to physical engagement, maintain balance between online and offline activities, and regularly assess the health of your community relationships.
