바리새인과 세리에 관한 예수님의 예화
예수님은 게네사렛 호수가에 있는 배에서 가르치십니다. 바리새인과 세리가 예배당에 기도하러 가는 예화를 말하십니다. 두 남자는 다른 방식으로 기도를 합니다. 이야깃속 바리새인은 혼자 서서 자신의 존경받을만한 점들을 나열합니다. 다른사람들과 달리 자신은 욕심없고, 부정하지 않고, 간음하는 자가 아닌것에 하나님께 감사합니다. 정확하게 세리를 논하며 그와 같지 않게 하심을 하나님께 감사합니다. 바리새인은 거침없이 하나님께 자기가 한 일들을 말합니다: 그는 이주동안 금식 하고 십일조를 냅니다. 세리는 멀리 제단 앞에 서 있습니다. 고개를 숙이고 가슴을 칩니다. 그는 그저 이렇게 말합니다, “하나님, 죄인인 저를 불쌍히 여기옵소서.”

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men — swindlers, evildoers, adulterers — or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and pay tithes of all that I acquire.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance, unwilling even to lift up his eyes to heaven. Instead, he beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man, rather than the Pharisee, went home justified. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
