One day on my first Camino, I was walking along getting a bit hungry, when suddenly this big, beautiful apple fell right in front of me on the path. Juicy and sweet. It was one of the best apples I have ever eaten. The Camino provides, if I'm honest, I have a little bit of a love hate relationship with this phrase. I get the sentiment that along the pilgrim's journey things have a way of working out. However, the Camino is a path to make it a human is to make it something that it never can be. It's dismissive of a greater kindness and personhood. Let's take for example, this fountain of wine that is for pilgrims as they leave Irae. The Camino doesn't provide this wine. It didn't remove the stones from the field, plant the vines centuries ago, and then harvest the grapes and nurture them into wine. It didn't stop to think that A, perhaps someone might enjoy this as a blessing along their journey. It didn't kindly build a building, put tanks and a fountain in and refill it daily as an undeserved gift for those who pass. People did all that, and those people are a reflection of the good God who made them. When humans act in kindness, we're acting like our maker. Ultimately God himself, is providing for us along the Camino, so much so that he put himself into humanity so that we can be his means of sharing his goodness like a fountain of wine for all who pass by. Jesus reminds us not to worry about life because God himself looks over us. As you experience God's goodness on the Camino, to whom do you direct your gratitude? As the Bible writer St. Paul said, and God is able to make all grace abound to you, that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. Second Corinthians nine, eight.
