Halfway to Santiago. Think of everything you've experienced on the Camino so far. Diverse landscape, tortillas, changing weather, cafe, conche, new friends, challenging days and moments of doubt. Some days you've bounced out of your bed and others, you've dragged yourself to the path. At times like this, it is important to stop and cultivate gratitude in our lives, to give thanks to the one who watches over us. Something really special happens to us when we give thanks. All of the naval gazing that we tend to do suddenly becomes less important. We see things we otherwise easily miss, seeing the beauty and blessings that surround us. Science even shows that grateful people are happier and more resilient. Gratitude is a kind of directional arrow for our soul, especially in difficult times. Like the yellow arrows on the Camino, it guides us toward the source of all goodness, the giver of all good things. Our hearts and attitudes can easily be oriented to all sorts of unhelpful things, such as consumable products, competition with others, hate, jealousy, pride, and self. However, gratitude requires that we take stock and recognize that something bigger than ourselves is at play. And when we begin to orient our hearts in the right direction, the journey is simply that much easier. Paul encourages us to give thanks always and for everything to God the Father, through Jesus Christ. Surely goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23, 6 for each new morning with its light, for rest and shelter, for the night, for health and food, for love and friends, for everything your goodness sends, give thanks to the God of heaven. For his faithful love endures forever.
