There's a lot of noise
and distraction in our world today,
whether it be city noise, people talking around us, music
or podcasts playing in our ears,
or Netflix playing on our TVs and tablets.
We are easily distracted.
I don't know about you, but I often find
that my mind is constantly spinning filled
with thoughts from all of this input.
But here, here on the Camino de Santiago,
something very different is going on here.
We can unplug.
We don't have things competing for our attention.
Most of our relationships
and responsibilities have been left behind
or simplified to a new quiet.
Here we begin to reflect and think of our lives in new ways.
The most common sound we hear is the crunch
of pebbles under our feet.
Here. The reverberation
of reflection over our lives allows us very often
for the first time to experience the feedback
of our own footsteps.
Here, the simple crunch, crunch of the Camino, our thoughts,
our fears, our regrets, our hopes, our longings,
they come forward, unashamed
and innocent, allowing us to be more aware
and present than we otherwise are.
Don't run from the feedback of your own footsteps today.
Don't cover them up with music or conversations.
Listen to them. Invite God into your inner thoughts.
What's God saying to you through them?
Pray is the psalmist king.
David did search me, oh God, and know my heart.
Test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me
and the way of life.
Psalm 1 39.
