A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

Frederick Nietzche once wrote, the essential thing in heaven and earth is that there should be a long obedience in the same direction that thereby results and always has resulted in the long run, something which has made life worth living. The Kaino has very much been a long obedience in the same direction. This is a faith journey when starting out. Some are more confident than others, but something propels us all forward. The hope of the promised city. When starting out, Santiago felt far away, but we slowly plotted along, trusting the experience of all those who have gone before us. We trusted the path that they laid out despite the distance we followed the arrows. Perhaps along the way we wavered and we wondered if we were going the right direction. We grew and we changed, and in the end, should we continue to trust the arrows, the stories of those who have gone before. We will arrive with joy as a writer of Hebrews expresses it. Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin, which so easily entangles us and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who, for the joy set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and he has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12, one and two. So, Lord, may we live to your glory. May we complete our course with a long obedience in the same direction. Amen.
