A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is the shade on your right hand. The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. The Lord will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.

Have you ever played the game of Leapfrog?
Do you ever feel like this is
what you're doing on the Camino?
Maybe instead of greeting each other with BU
and Camino all the time, we should be saying something
like, see you in a few minutes.
Pass someone up, and you're almost guaranteed
to see them in an hour.
It's like we all walk at about the same pace as humans.
We're limited into how fast we can walk,
which is about five kilometers an hour.
So much of the Camino is about learning our limitations.
But here's the thing about God.
He's not impatiently waiting somewhere far off ahead,
slightly annoyed at our pace and frailty.
No, he's actually chosen
to move at the pace a human can walk.
All throughout the pages of scripture,
God comes down to be with humans.
He moves at our pace.
He patiently pilgrim with us for our benefit, speaking
with us, listening to us, and in Jesus becoming one of us.
As you walk today, remember that you do not walk alone.
God is with you. Be comforted by this ancient song.
The Israel sang on their pilgrim journeys.
I look up to the mountains, does my help come from there?
My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.
He will not let you stumble.
The one who watches over you will not slumber.
Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.
The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.
The sun will not harm you by day nor the moon by night.
The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.
The Lord keeps watch over you as you come
and you go both now and forever.
Amen.
