“You are the salt of the earth;but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men” Matthew 5:13 (NKJV).

Have you ever wondered how you can make a difference in this world? After all, you are just one person-is it possible?

I have a strong desire to do work that is significant, to do work that makes an eternal difference. I’m sure that has a lot to do with why I’m a full-time missionary with Jesus Film Project®. I am deeply fulfilled and feel God’s pleasure when I’m able to impact others with my life and ultimately with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

While serving in Australia, I visited the Great Barrier Reef. I’ll never forget experiencing that turquoise world. Especially the staggering splendor of the reef.

Ocean coral may look like rocks and share the characteristics of plants, but they are actually animals. To be exact they are aquatic marine invertebrates that live in warm, shallow waters around the world. Many marine organisms make their home among the vivid coral, making reefs some of the most varied and colorful habitats on Earth.

Coral is a fragile animal. If you spot plain, white coral, often it is dead. Many things can harm or kill them, from slight temperature changes to being stepped on by divers. Most of all, coral needs salty water to live-without it, they will die. Salt is an important nutrient for the survival of this animal.

The Bible tells us Christians are to be the salt of the earth. Without salt, meals can be tasteless and boring. Salt is a robust seasoning, adding flavor that brings food alive. God’s children must be the thing that attracts others to a life more abundant, more satisfying.

Just as salt brings life to coral reefs, helping them thrive and become beautiful creatures, so we offer the same to this world. When we allow our witness, our example to wash over our friends, neighbors and loved ones, we point them to Jesus-the only hope. But if we lose our saltiness, we are good for nothing according to God’s word.

You and I can make a huge difference by being salt to this world-so that all may hear the message of Christ, come to Him, and experience life more abundantly.
